Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume and reduce lines and wrinkles as well as being used to contour areas such as cheeks and reduce dark circles under eyes. The dermal fillers used at Facial rejuvenation are based on hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin and gives skin its elasticity, but as we age it is diminished which results in lines and wrinkles appearing. The filler is  a clear gel that is injected under the skin, it is semi permanant and eventually broken down by the body.

The fillers used at facial rejuvenation are Teosyal, Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero. Which filler is used will depend on the area of the face to be treated among other things.

What happens when I have the treatment?

Numbing cream will be applied to the area to be treated 30 minutes before your procedure. Dermal filler will then be injected into the skin. You will be able to see the effects of the filler straight away but the results will improve over the next few weeks. Often the area treated will be red and maybe swollen, sometimes bruising can occur. This will all subside after a couple of days.

Is it safe ?

The types of dermal fillers used at Facial rejuvenation are generally very safe and have a very good safety record. The mains risks are bleeding (during the procedure), swelling and brusining. As with most things there is a rare possibility of an allergic reaction and therefore it is important your practitioner is medically trained (Like Dr Thomas) and knows what to do should any complications arise. All risks and complications will be discussed at your consultation and you should always disclose any medical conditions to Dr Thomas.

Will it hurt?

Most people cope well with the procedure and notice only a mild stingy sensation. Numbing cream can be applied to the area to be treated to make the procedure more comfortable. When treating the lips, a dental block can also be used, this completely numbs the lips but may create slightly more swelling. Most dermal fillers also contain local anesthetic within the gel, which, once injected numbs the area. Types of anesthesia can be discussed at your consultation.

How long will the filler last?

This will depend on the individual client and their habits, the area treated and the type and amount of dermal filler used. In general dermal fillers last between 6-18 months.

Can I have the treatment on the same day as the consultation?

Yes. As dermal fillers don’t need to be ordered via prescription, if in stock , it is possible to have treatment the same days as the consultation. However it is encouraged that you take some time to fully consider your treatment options and therefore make an additional appointment for your procedure.

Anti wrinkle treatments

Botulinum toxin type A (Botox TM / Azzalure TM) is a naturally derived protein that acts upon muscle nerve endings . Once injected it relaxes the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles making the face appear more youthful. It is mainly used in the uppermost third of the face, such as around the eyes (crows feet), on the forehead and in between the eyes at the frown lines.  It can also be used to smooth smokers lines around the mouth and lines in the neck and help lift the brows.

What happens when I have the treatment?

Anti wrinkle treatment using botulinum toxin is a generally a fairly quick procedure. It involves injecting the product into specific muscle groups with a very fine needle. Botox will generally take effect  in about 4-7 days but it can take up to 2 weeks to be fully effective.

Is it safe ?

Botulinum toxin is generally very safe when used in a clinical setting and has been used in medicine for many many years to treat conditions such as cerebral palsy. Side effects from cosmetic use are generally rare but can include bruising and ptosis (drooping of the eyelid) .

Will it hurt?

The treatment is practically painless and most people only feel a very slight scratch when product is injected.

How long will it last?

The effects of botulinum toxin tends to last between 3-6 months. As treated muscles gradually regain function , the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear. Muscles can be repeatedly treated, every few months, to maintain a smooth appearance. Over time you may also experience that your lines and wrinkles seem less severe , as the muscles are trained to be more relaxed.

Can I have the treatment on the same day as the consultation?

Yes, as a dentist I can hold stock, so if I have stock I can treat you the same day. In some cases however the Botulinum A toxin will need to be prescribed and an additional appointment made.

Lip Fillers

Dermal fillers can be used to increase the volume and definition of lips.

What happens when I have the treatment and will it hurt?

Numbing cream will be applied to the area to be treated 30 minutes before your procedure.  A dental block can also be used, this completely numbs the lips but my create slightly more swelling. Most dermal fillers for lips also contain local anaesthetic within the gel, which, once injected numbs the area. Lip filler will then be injected into the skin. You will be able to see the effects of the lip filler straight away but the results will improve over the next few weeks.

After treatment your lips will be red and swollen, sometimes bruising can occur. The swelling tends to be greatest the day after the procedure, so you must consider carefully when to have treatment as you may need some downtime a day or two after. Any swelling and bruising tends to subside after a couple of days but can take up to two weeks to fully settle. I advise that you delay any dental treatment or treatment around the mouth for up to two weeks post treatment and once the product has fully integrated.

How long will it last?

This will depend on the individual client and their habits, the area treated and the type and amount of dermal filler used. In general dermal fillers last between 6-18 months.
